Significant 3-week pain reduction with methylprednisolone vs saline injection for knee OA
Ann Rheum Dis. 1996 Nov;55(11):829-3260 patients were included in this crossover randomized controlled trial which investigated the effect of corticosteroid injection versus saline injection for pain reduction and improvement in quadriceps strength in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Patients were randomized to the order in which they received a methylprednisolone acetate 40mg injection and 0.9% saline injection, separated by 8 weeks. Results demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in pain scores after 3 weeks with methylprednisolone acetate compared to placebo. The intention-to-treat analysis suggested a significant within-group change in quadriceps strength after 3 weeks following methylprednisolone acetate injection, although this was not confirmed in the per-protocol analysis.
