252 elderly patients with a femoral neck fracture were randomized to treatment with either hemiarthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty. Patients were followed for 12 years postoperatively. Only 50 patients originally randomized were alive at 12-year follow-up. The results indicate that there were no significant differences between groups in modified Harris Hip Score, the incidence of general complications, or the incidence of revision.
