Similar functional recovery after THA between formal outpatient PT and home-based exercise therapy
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2017 Apr 19;99(8):648-655120 patients scheduled for primary, unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to formal outpatient physical therapy or to a home-based exercise therapy program postoperatively for rehabilitation. Patients were assessed at 1-month follow-up and at 6-12 month follow-up for results on the Harris Hip Score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and Short Form 36-Item General Health Survey. The results demonstrated no significant differences between groups for improvement from baseline in any outcome measure after 1 month or 6-12 months.
