Accuracy and clinical effects improved with ultrasound-guided vs landmark arthrocentesis

Nine studies (7 RCTs and 2 nRCTs) were selected for inclusion in this meta-analysis to evaluate to accuracy and clinical effects of ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis versus landmark-guided arthrocentesis. Accuracy was significantly higher with ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis compared landmark-guided arthrocentesis. Pooled results for both pain during arthrocentesis and at 2 week follow-up also demonstrated significant effects of ultrasound-guidance versus landmark-guidance.
