60 patients about to receive total knee replacement (TKR) surgery were randomized to determine the efficacy of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) solution with added ketorolac. Patients were assessed for intravenous (IV) morphine patient controlled analgesia (PCA) consumption; time to first IV morphine PCA request after surgery; pain intensity (Visual analog scale VAS) and; length of stay. The study demonstrated that the addition of ketorolac in LIA solution contributes to decreased consumption of IV morphine PCA along with prolonged time to first request of IV PCA morphine. The study also found that pain scores were better for the ketorolac group during the first 48 hours after surgery and that this group also presented with lower oxycodone consumption between 48 and 96 hours after surgery. Home readiness in the ketorolac group patients was superior compared to those in the control group.
