Two randomized controlled trials and two prospective cohort studies were included in this meta-analysis which compared outcomes after discectomy for lumbar disc herniation between groups which received additional intervention with an annular closure or repair device (Barricaid; Intrinsic Therapeutics, Inc., or Anulex-Xclose; Anulex Technologies), and groups which received discectomy alone. Incidence of reherniation was significantly lower among the annular closure/repair device groups. Incidences of other complications did not significantly differ between treatment groups.
