50 patients over sixty years of age with severe displaced unstable three- or four-part proximal humeral fracture were randomized to undergo open reduction and internal fixation using an angular stable implant, or conservative treatment using a sling bandage. Results revealed that mean Constant score difference, 15D health-related quality of life, and ASES self-assessment form did not differ significantly between treatment groups.
