Nine randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis and systematic review, which was conducted to analyze the effects of anticonvulsants - including gabapentinoids and topiramate - in patients with either nonspecific low back pain or lumbar radicular pain secondary to spinal stenosis. Results on gabapentinoids demonstrated no significant differences relative to placebo on either pain or disability measures in patients with either pathology, coupled with a significant increase in the rate of adverse events. Results on topiramate demonstrated a statistically significant effect on immediate pain relative to placebo in patients with nonspecific low back pain, though differences thereafter were not significant. Additionally, no significant effect of topiramate compared to placebo was observed among patients with lumbar radicular pain.
