120 patients were randomized to one of three groups to receive either interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB), general anaesthesia (GA), or a combination of both methods (ISB + GA) when undergoing shoulder arthroscopy. The purpose of the study was to compare the two anaesthetic methods with respect to opioid consumption on the day of surgery, with secondary outcomes of interest including anaesthesia times and patient satisfaction. Interscalene brachial plexus block was found to be superior to the other two anaesthesia groups based on reduced opioid consumption on the day of surgery and faster recovery.
