Fifty-eight patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis were randomized to use either lateral wedge insoles or neutral insoles for a period of 24 weeks. The purpose of the study was to assess whether the use of lateral wedge insoles decreased pain and improved function in patients with medial knee osteoarthritis compared to patients treated with neutral insoles. A visual analog pain scale, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index, and the Lequesne scale were used to assess outcomes. Results indicated that patients with both interventions experienced significant improvements in pain levels and function, but there was no significant difference between groups in those changes.
