112 patients with chronic plantar fasciitis that was unresponsive to conservative treatment for at least 6 months were randomized to assess whether 3 applications of 1000 impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group I) led to improved clinical outcomes in comparison to 3 applications of 10 impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group II). Patient satisfaction was the main outcome measure, in addition to pain severity and the ability to walk without pain. With follow-up through 5 years, Group I showed significantly improved outcomes in terms of patient satisfaction, pain scores, and pain-free walking compared to Group II.
