J Arthroplasty. 2015 May;30(5):754-7.

196 patients were randomized to receive either hyaluronic acid (HA) or a placebo in knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. HA was compared to placebo to test the efficacy in reduction of pain and function. Results of this study found no significant benefit of HA treatment over placebo for visual analogue score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), or knee flexion. However, both groups demonstrated significant improvement from baseline values to 6 month follow-up.
