78 patients scheduled for total shoulder arthroplasty with an interscalene block for regional anesthesia were randomized to the procedure with or without the addition of intraoperative local infiltration of liposomal bupivacaine. Patients were assessed for narcotic consumption over the first 24 hours after surgery, and for pain scores over the first 72 hours after surgery. Narcotic consumption was significantly higher over the first 24 hours among patients administered liposomal bupivacaine compared to patients who were not. No significant differences between groups were noted in pain scores at any time point up to 72 hours postoperatively.
