OTA 2019: Pre-operative urinary catheter in pertrochanteric fractures can prevent urinary retention

Urinary catheters in immobilized patients can help to prevent urinary retention, but also increase the risk of infection. It is unclear whether they should be routinely used in the pre-operative period. This study randomized 105 patients with pertrochanteric fractures to urinary catheter retention for 48 hours versus removal pre-operatively. Overall, pre-operative urinary catheter prevented peri-operative urinary retention, but increased the rate of asymptomatic pyuria. However, there was no difference in the rate of urinary tract infection.
