J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2009 Mar;91(3):388-94

238 patients undergoing surgery for fractures occurring below the knee were randomized to receive prophylaxis with the low molecular weight heparin or a placebo treatment for 14 days. The results of this trial at 12 week follow-up indicated that there were no significant differences in the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) between the two groups. Second analysis revealed that DVT occurrence was associated with age and the type of fracture regardless of treatment. Author indication revealed that ideal sample size was not achieved due to withdrawal of funding.
