25 patients with an acute nondisplaced fracture of the scaphoid waist were randomized to receive treatment with either cast immobilization or percutaneous screw fixation. Patients were evaluated over 2 years for time to fracture union, wrist motion, grip strength, return to work, and overall patient satisfaction. Screw fixation patients had a significantly faster time to fracture union and return to work. There were no other significant differences in outcome measures between the groups.
