SICOT2018: Comparison of surgical, clinical, & complication outcomes of MIS vs. conventional DHS

60 patients scheduled for fixation of an intertrochanteric fracture with a dynamic hip screw were randomized to either minimally invasive or conventional fixation. Patients were assessed for outcome over the first 52 weeks after surgery. Groups were reported to not significantly differ with respect to length of hospital stay, time to union, functional outcome on the modified Harris Hip Score, and incidences of loss of reduction, malunion, and implant failure. The MIS DHS group was reported to have favourable results to the conventional DHS group with respect to operative time, blood loss, pain scores, and incidence of surgical site infection, though the statistical significance of these differences was unclear.
