Similar Clinical Outcomes at 2-Yrs with Titanium and PEEK Interference Screws in ACL Reconstruction
Am J Sports Med. 2019 Aug;47(10):2386-2393.

133 patients scheduled for a primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were randomized to receive a 4-strand hamstring tendon allograft fixated to the tibia and femur with either polyether ether ketone (PEEK) or titanium interference screws. The primary outcomes of interest included the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scores. Secondary outcomes of interest included clinical outcomes and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) outcomes. Follow up was performed up to 2 years post-operation, except MRI outcomes, which were analyzed at 1 year post-operation. Results from the study revealed no significant differences in all outcomes between the PEEK and titanium groups, with the exception of the proportion of patients with complete femoral integration and femoral tunnel volume, which were both significantly smaller in the PEEK group compared to the titanium group at 1 year post-operation.
