THA: Computer-assisted navigation can improve accuracy of acetabular cup implantation
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2007 Mar;89(3):494-960 patients with hip osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis were randomized to either receive total hip arthroplasty using an imageless computer-assisted navigation system or freehand implantation to insert the acetabular component. The post-operative tomography scans completed at one month indicated that computer-assisted insertion of the acetabular cup resulted in a reduction of placement outside the safe zone, therefore improving accuracy of the acetabular cup positioning.
