100 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a postoperative drainage autologous blood transfusion (ABT) system or no drainage, in order to determine whether the ABT system provides superior maintenance of haemoglobin levels after surgery. The results of this study suggest that postoperative ATB drainage did not significantly increase postoperative hemoglobin levels, reduce total blood loss or the number of homologous blood transfusions required.
