Uncertain impact of MPFL reconstruction added to Elmslie-Trillat for patellar dislocation
Am J Sports Med. 2017 Feb;45(2):369-37634 patients with recurrent lateral patellar dislocation were randomized to undergo a modified Elmslie-Trillat procedure (tibial tubercle transfer) with or without the addition of medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. Patients were assessed over 5 year follow-up for incidence of redislocation, functional failure requiring reoperation, functional scores, and quantitative CT parameters. Overall, only one case of redislocation was documented, occurring in the control group. Functional scores did not significant differ between groups over follow-up. On CT, changes in patellar tilt and congruence angles during quadriceps contraction demonstrated better outcome in the MPFL reconstruction group compared to the control group.
