30 patients, 60-90 years of age, with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to one of three groups: high speed resistance training plus balance exercises (HSRT-B), HSRT alone, or a control group who continued daily activities as usual. The primary purpose of this pilot study was to test the feasibility a larger scale trial of the interventions. Overall, adherence to exercise programs was high, and no discontinuations due to the interventions or serious adverse events were recorded. Tolerability of the programs, including with and without additional balance training, was also high. Trends were observed with respect to greater improvement in functional measures with both the HSRT-B and HSRT alone group compared to control, though the study was not adequately powered for efficacy measures such as these, and a larger study is needed to better estimate effects of interventions in these areas.
