Eighty-two patients undergoing an upper limb orthopaedic surgery were randomized to receive a supraclavicular brachial plexus nerve blockade containing ropivacaine and lidocaine as well as the addition of either epinephrine or normal saline. The outcomes of interest were the perfusion index and perfusion index ratios, which are used as measures to determine the success of a nerve blockade. Outcomes were assessed up to 30 minutes post-injection. Results demonstrated that epinephrine addition to the supraclavicular brachial plexus nerve block does not significantly influence perfusion index values.
