139 patients (age range 33-85 yr, mean age 66 yr) scheduled to undergo primary unilateral THA were randomized to 3 groups: one without a closed suction drain (CSD), another with CSD for 24 hours, and third with CSD for 48 hours. It was concluded that prolonged serous drainage is not affected by the presence or absence of the closed suction drainage. Patients with the suction drain were noted to have reduced swelling and pain during recovery period.
