This review/meta-analysis comprised of individual participant data from 11 Medtronic trials and 1 randomized trial, and aggregate data extracted from 35 observational studies, to investigate the efficacy of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) compared to iliac crest bone grafts in spinal fusion. An analysis of results revealed that fusion rates were higher with rhBMP-2, but did not lead to clinically significant reductions in pain. Safety trends depicted an increased risk of adverse events with rhBMP-2, although these findings were inconclusive.
