16 studies (12 RCTs and 4 non-RCTs) comparing the mini-incision posterior approach to the standard posterior approach in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were included in this systematic review/meta-analysis. The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of dislocation. Pooled data revealed that the rate of hip dislocation did not differ between treatment approaches, however the mini-incision posterior group demonstrated improved operative time, length of hospital stay, intraoperative blood loss, total perioperative blood loss, and Harris Hip Score when compared with the standard posterior approach. The incidence of adverse events (nerve injury, infection, or venous thromboembolic events) was comparable between groups.
