25 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis which compared bisphosphonate therapy to control intervention for effect on postoperative bone mineral density following total hip and total knee arthroplasty. Overall, in THA and TKA cohorts, bisphosphonate therapy was associated with significantly greater total periprosthetic bone mineral density compared to control intervention up to 5-10 year follow-up. Among THA cohorts, significant effects were located within Gruen zones 1, 2, 6, and 7.
